Thanks! The subscription part is done with the “Subscribe to comments” WordPress plugin: http://txfx.net/code/wordpress/subscribe-to-comments/ Literally, you download it into the plugins directory (step 1), activate it with one click on the plugins screen (step 2), and well that’s it.. you can optionally go to the configuration screen and do some neat stuff but I never bothered. It is one of my favorite plugins.

I wish I could get Katie to move her blog to wordpress. She's got huge troll problems that would be easily taken care of on any system other than blogger. But she says she just doesn't care. Blogger is decent for a free alternative, I suppose. I'm not sure it's worth moving from blogger to the free wp blogs.
