I am a nurse and have opportunity to come into contact with many people. I would have been thinking the same thing as you, except that I personally ran into several people that had perfectly healthy dogs and after eating the dog food, had to put their pets to sleep due to the pain and detoriating health of their best friends. What better way to prompt attention then to attack our best little friends.
