Last night I made a mock shepherd’s pie. Basically, brown a pound of ground beef, add in some drained green beans and a can of tomato soup. Grease a 2 quart casserole and put this mixture into it. Then spoon mashed potatoes over the mixture and bake uncovered for 30 minutes at 350°.
I made my mashed potatoes by hand last night. That was the first time in my life I had cooked mashed potatoes that weren’t instant and I have to say it was easy! And I think the results were quite tasty.
A rule with children: Never mix food. Shepherd’s pie breaks this rule so naturally then only people partaking of it are the adults. This would make a nice dish for a potluck.
Ugh, glad to hear my kids aren’t the only ones who want food that hasn’t touched another food. I don’t know how that nutcase Amy Dacyczn does it, feeding her kids casserole all the time. Sure would cut down on food costs, which I think are killing us all.
Try feeding a 7 person household with 2 German Shepherds, 2 cats, 1 snake, and a tank of snails with a fish in it! Granted, Tommy is at college now so our food cost has dropped by 1 person but we still are the finicky household. One person won’t eat onions. One person won’t eat meat except for chicken…oh and that one won’t eat vegetables or fruits either (doesn’t leave much). One will only eat meat and ketchup and the occasional apple or mango. It goes on.
I have often considered planting a garden but I know the maintenance and effort exceeds the value unless you team up with a few neighbors and do a really big one. I stick to buying bulk at Sam’s and strategically shopping the sales at the Kroger that floats in air. Btw, I don’t think John Yates article holds water. That Kroger is not supported by gas sales. That Kroger serves a community that needs a grocery in that exact location. The people who shop that Kroger don’t have a huge number of options. I’m in Rocky Hill. I shop Butler and Bailey often but for large food restocking I find myself at the floating Kroger. I avoid Food City like the plague but still slip in there when I am driving past when my list is small for items that I know I can’t get at Butler and Bailey. Walmart with its buying power makes economic sense to shop for staples, canned goods, and beverages but their meat I find lacking and I avoid their vegetable section. Without the floating Kroger I would find myself having to take much longer trips for my grocery shopping to reach the Kroger at Cedar Bluff or the one near campus.
Yes, food prices are horrible! I like how milk prices fluctuate with gas prices. All this time I thought cows ate grass when really they run on petroleum!
yuk – you never ate real mashed potatoes before – does that mean you only ever ate instant mashed potatoes – or plastic spuds we call them – cos they are yuck!
yummy mashed spuds are best mashed with a knob of butter, some sourcream and or milk and grated cheese mashed in – and then mashed until they are fluffy – for extras add some tumeric or some thyme
mashed spuds are best with sausages (bangers) and onions or cheese sauce and corned silverside – and with peas!

I’ve eaten real mashed potatoes often. Until this week I’d never personally cooked real mashed potatoes always opting for the instant flakes that look more like laundry detergent than food. But my eyes have been opened!
