  2. My favorite kind of spam.

  3. I haven’t figured out how to deal with those yet. Seems a new trend..steal blog content. I could disable the trackback but then I wouldn’t know who is stealing my content. As soon as I can figure out how, I’ll blacklist their ips or something. I’m sure they are just taking the content from the RSS feed and using it as filler between their ads. It irritates me because I have no recourse to get the content pulled. I spent a week composing one post only to have it stolen within a day of posting. Won’t google view what was supposed to be purely original as duplicate content now since the thief put it on 3 websites.

I could go to partial rss feeds but I personally despite partial feeds and find myself less likely to read beyond the few sentences of summary.

I think a plugin akin to Spam Karma is going to have to be developed to deny RSS feeds to known content thieves.

  4. I hadn’t thought about it that way. I’ve had it happen a few times, but I never thought of it as stealing content. I’m not sure how much recourse there really is, since they’re just blogging like anybody else, just without citation, etc.

Don’t go to partial rss feeds. I can’t stand them. I tend to delete them out of my reader, and I’ve been meaning to write a bitchy post about it sometime, because there are so many good blogs that I don’t read because I can’t stand having to click through to get more than one sentence.

  6. I don’t think that you can answer your question using this data, it’s too broad. Better questions, perhaps, might be: Does West High School offer an academic program that will challenge my child and allow him/her to develop fully academically? Is there a sufficient population of academically motivated students? Does the administration support students and faculty who are interested in academic excellence? In my experience the answer to all of those questions is yes. Our only significant issue had to do with having to sharing a Latin teacher with another High School – and that was more of a budget issue I think. Additionally, there is always the dual enrollment option for seniors. At any rate, I think that the West guidance office could probably give you specific answers about AP and honors course offerings, extra curricular activities – such as academic team, model UN, Youth in Government, etc., as well as college admissions prospects for West students.

  7. There is more to my question than just data.

I have long said that I would never move once my children entered high school. I moved between my sophomore year and junior year and the affect was that my academics hurt and my social opportunities were damaged. I have no high school class ring because I felt no ownership to either of the two high schools.

Now without my consent, nor ability to do anything about it, my daughter will find herself in the same situation. Already she has spent a lot of time at Bearden High School (she is an entering freshman). She has tested out of keyboarding. She has started to know some teachers and the layout of the school. She has been accepted on the flag team. And a year later, she will have all that yanked away to have to become familiar with a new school where the clicks and friends have already bonded. She will be an outsider. I am sure that she will overcome and excel; however, it is not a situation anyone should ever encourage.

I question the safety of West which appears to be building a brick fence around its property. I have had an adult who is intimate with the school suggest that my concern is valid.

Much of my response is emotional but I have the right to be emotional about this rezoning because these are my children and there are better ways to handle the zoning of our schools such as a phased in approach where ALL currently enrolled students are grandfathered while upcoming middle schoolers know that they will go elsewhere.

  8. […] Doug posted some statistics on Knoxville schools. There are more statistics available here. The News-Sentinel posts a yearly report card comparing all the Knox County schools around the same time that parents get their child’s TCAP scores, but I can’t seem to find that report online. […]

  9. I agree with you about phasing the rezoning in, that seems very reasonable. I also empathize with you about changing schools, we made the painful decision to move our younger child from the Beaumont Magnet back to her zoned school last year. The feeling of powerlessness is very frustrating. The school system made several significant changes to the magnet program at Beaumont without even the courtesy of informing the parents. The changes diluted to program to the point that it wasn’t worth keeping her there, in our judgment. But then again, we had a choice.

You have a lot of very valid concerns, I know that my daughter (senior to be) mentioned that she has been assigned some incoming freshman to mentor – perhaps that is a student council program. If you end up getting rezoned, you might consider asking for a mentor. I think that is a great idea because I think all incoming freshmen probably have apprehensions, even if they have had siblings go to the school.

As for the fence, the West High foundation raised a significant amount of money to construct it – a couple hundred thousand dollars if I remember correctly. I am sure that it will look better than the chain link fence that it is replacing, the mock-ups looked great. I don’t perceive security at West to be a major problem, but I’m guessing that West probably has more incidents than Bearden.
