I think people will find the solution in using services like Twitterless and programs like TweetDeck that allow you to group your friends. By grouping you can still follow as many as you like without losing messages to the noise.

Also, I’m pretty sure Loic said that Twhirl would see grouping in the not too distant future. But I could be wrong.
