Vroom Vrrroom
Wahoo! The Jeep is working again. See. I do my own brakes. The job is an hour or two tops. But this time I misplaced my Haynes manual, and forgetting that Autozone has repair manuals online for free, I grabbed some torque settings off a forum and ran with them. Buuut I grabbed the number 41 and decided the brake caliper bolts should be 41 foot-pounds but nooooo 41 newton-meters is what the forum was referencing. And 41 ft-lb is much more torque than the 30 ft-lbs that I should have been using. So at about 35 ft-lbs the bolt turned to butter and snapped. Ahhh! Brought me back to my freshman engineering classes at the University of Tennessee. We had this cool machine that would stretch metal bars until they thinned in the middle and snapped. Somehow we were supposed to associate numbers with the snapping but mostly I stared in awe at the great coolness. Anyhow, this is how the Jeep has looked for much of the past week:
My daughter is very pleased that I will no longer be commandeering her car! I’m sure it would have been Karate Kid uncool to have mom dropping the senior off at high school holding cars keys and a parking pass.
Update: Ride into client’s office went well today. The Jeep even stopped without having to run it into anything! I did catch a check engine light for a bit on the Interstate but after stopping at Starbucks the Jeep seems happier.

Doing those thing ya gotta do
It’s 1:40am. I’m exhausted. I’ve just torn my office apart looking for a lost piece of paper required for a form. I found it! Unfortunately, I’m now torn between grabbing some sleep or staying up all night to fill out the form for which I needed this piece of paper (no small task). Of course, one son has to be at the high school by 7:45 so tomorrow is an early day. This adult life is hard sometimes. I recommend keeping yours as simple as possible. Stay on top of things. Don’t procrastinate. And with that said, I’m going to bed. This paperwork can get done tomorrow.

jQuery roadblock
jQuery problem:

</table>What jQuery would allow me to click on "click me second" and change the color of the text "click me first"?
It’s a little more complicated than that. The real source has a plus image on the first row. Once you click that I use .hide() to make the plus go away. I create the 2nd row which has a minus image and a plus image. If you click the plus image, it disappears and creates a third row. The minus image, should 1st) cause the immediate plus image above it to appear 2) then disappear its own row. All plus images have a class of "addrow" and minus images have a class of "deleterow" I thought prev() would be doing it but I get nothing. Specifically .prev(‘.addrow’).show();

Often I run across code like this:

Frankly, that makes me twitch a little. This has the same result:

We have these astounding mountains in our backyard. A mere 45 minute drive deposits us in a little peace of Heaven. This past Saturday we took a day with the family and visiting relatives to enjoy nature and splash in the stream at the Chimney Tops picnic area. It was a fantastic day! See Cathy’s pictures.

Kindle – Killing paper books forever
I’ve declared for some time now that we are in the midst of a revolution and no one realizes it. That revolution is the death of books. Much like CDs replaced LP records in the early 80s, we will look back at this time and say that in the 2010s electronic books replaced paper books. Paper books will become the thing of collectors. It will take 20 years to realize this as the Kindle and the Apple iPad work their way into schools. Once we get one generation of children through the school system primarily reading text books on e-readers instead of paper, traditional books will die.
I was going to buy a Kindle at the beginning of the week but Amazon was conveniently "temporarily out of stock." I did not realize this meant that Amazon was releasing a new Kindle at only $139
! They also improved the contrast on their $189 model
(the one interesting me but I was reluctant because I wanted the contrast of the $379 model
). Amazon is taking pre-orders to ship on August 27th. I can’t wait!
Update: Did you know you can buy the Barnes & Noble NOOK ebook reader (WiFi + 3G)
on Amazon? And the Sony Digital Reader
