It’s snowing! Quick, turn on the A/C! December 2, 2008 12:23 am

The house is 14.4°C right now. It was snowing today. Seems that the 3 year old has learned how to work the thermostat. I am now adding a digitally controlled, programmable, lockable thermostat to my wish list.

I have one of those at our house upstairs, where the kids’ bedrooms are.

It’s worth its weight in gold.

I like the idea of being able to have the temperature automatically lowered while we sleep then raised just before we wake and perhaps lowered again midday and perhaps raised for bath time and bedtime. The days in the fall when we went completely without a/c absolutely and significantly lowered our electric bill.

So they actually make thermostats that the children can’t dork with?

They absolutely do. The one we have has a lock. It’s not password protected, but you’d have to find a manual to figure it out. And it is scheduled to warm and cool at the right times, so it’s cooler at 3 in the morning, etc, and it knows no one’s there in the afternoon. And it’s smart enough to figure out how long it takes to get to the correct temperature, so if you tell it you’re going to be home at five, it figures out when it will have to turn on to make it to the right temp by 5.

Pretty nifty. I wish we had the same unit downstairs. The one upstairs came with the new heat pump we had installed to turn a closet into a bedroom.
