Too much open..here comes the link dump
I often will see a link in Twitter or on Popurls and open it in another Firefox tab with the intention of reading it and/or blogging about it. Sometimes the link opens a picture that I want to photoshop. More times than not I skim these articles in 30 seconds and leave them for later. Eventually I dump them to Delicious tagged "toread" or "toblog" or I bookmark all the tabs in Firefox and close the window. In either case, I rarely return to the article and you miss out of mind altering, earth shattering, life changing commentary and information that sits collecting dust on an electronic shelf. One of these links could have saved the world! So, for society, I give you my tabs: (click more to read them) Continue reading Too much open..here comes the link dump

Star Trek – JJ Abrams Hits a Homerun!
Spoiler free!
My wife had but one request for her birthday (this coming Tuesday–she’ll be 21!) and that was a date to see J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek on opening night. A little luck, a babysitter and some Fandango magic later and Cathy and I had a date tonight! Star Trek officially opens tomorrow, the 8th, which with any other movie means the first showing is at midnight. Apparently, Hollywood recognized us old guys have jobs and families and did pre-release showings as early as 7:00pm. We hit the 7:30pm and us old guys it was! At first there didn’t appear to be anyone under 30 in the theater. For that matter, our theater closely resembled a Star Trek convention. We had munchkins, a blind lady, an albino (whom I went to college with and haven’t seen for like 15 years), grandparents supervising the 30 year olds, and a couple of guys who sounded like regulars for voice overs of Star Trek convention spoof videos spouting off Trek trivia.
The actual movie
Cathy said it first but I agree: Fans of the original Star Trek are going to absolutely LOVE this movie! It is packed full of references to the original TV series including one character that I wanted to reach out to and scream, "But don’t you understand! You’re wearing a red shirt!" People not familiar with the Star Trek franchise will see a technically good movie and should enjoy it but will miss the subtle inside jokes and references except for when the audience cheers at a few trademark lines. Live long and prosper!
A date!

What does this symbol mean?
Update: I had a wonderful response to this question here, on Twitter, and at Utterli! It appears that the symbol is the state symbol for the Palmetto State – South Carolina. In researching TN’s state symbol, I’ve discovered it is an elephant stomping on two halves of a broken donkey.

xkcd Sums Up Swine Flu on Twitter
The spread of swine flu
According to the map, while we slept Sacramento and Dallas picked up a couple of suspected cases, and Indiana picked up two confirmed cases of the swine flu. Hard to tell but looks like more activity in New York City, San Antonio, and the San Diego/Los Angeles area.
Repainting the house
I want to paint the children’s room with this pattern! I can already picture modifying a paint roller to make it easy. Oh! What if we painted the outside of the house with this pattern. That would rock!
After the Dogwood Parade There Was Music
We watched Sarah march in Knoxville’s Dogwood Parade last night. Afterwards we watched Brenden James Wright and The Wrongs (MySpace) play on Market Square.
I was introduced to The Wrongs when my brother-in-law turned Cathy onto Luther Wright and The Wrongs’ (MySpace) Rebuild the Wall, a bluegrass cover of Pink Floyd’s The Wall. It’s excellent!
A little sidenote to the architects of Market Square: As much as I miss the old pavalion, the new stage is very nice; however, your permanent poles with the stage lighting block the view of the stage from most seating unless you are positioned directly in the middle of the audience. Couldn’t they have been swung more to the side?
