True Love – Speechless Communication

When Cathy and I were dating, I could read her mind. How connected! To know one another’s thoughts without speaking a word is bliss.

All married couples are familiar with this non-verbal communication. It changes a little after tying the knot. Ok, it changes a lot. For instance, when dating, I knew what Cathy needed. Now married, I simply know how angry she is with me.

The kids have a game called Punch Buggy. We archaic folk know it as Slug Bug and shun the unnecessary "no punch backs" childishness. Our most open communication comes through this game.

When things are hunky-dory
Cathy will call Slug Bug and the color and choose a child. No hit thrown of course. Occasionally, for balance, I receive a no hitter. And we all laugh.
I may have irritated Cathy or she has had a frustrating day
I get a light punch to the arm.
I said something stupid
I will feel a sting, still to the arm.
I directly confront her, maybe without substance
She stares into the parking lots like a hawk searching for a mouse and wallops me a good one possibly leaving a bruise. Any body part is fair game.
My very presence annoys her for no rationale reason
She will make up seeing a slug bug and magically find one of those Jedi nerve places bringing subtle tears to the corners of my eyes
I yell at a child, scare her, or momentarily forget where I am
She waits until we move to the back of the car, then she takes the tailgate and repeatedly slams it on my head. As I falter toward the ground she takes the baby from my hands and storms into Target with the other children leaving me bloody, dizzy, and barely standing in the parking lot. She never tells me the color of the Volkswagen.

Ah! Now that’s efficient communication.

Odeo closes Audioblogger

If you have used Audioblogger (run by Odeo, Inc.) then you need to know that they are closing the service. MP3s made with the service will continue to exist and be hosted but you cannot create anything new. I never realized that Audioblogger wasn’t owned by that evil company Blogger.com.

Hello,

As of November 1, 2006, Audioblogger will no longer accept phone calls. MP3s made with the service will continue to be hosted and served but you will no longer be able to use Audioblogger to post new audio.

Audioblogger is an independent product, run by Odeo, Inc., a small startup company in San Francisco, CA. We are not affiliated with Google or Blogger except that we operate and provide the Audioblogger service.

Given our limited resources, we have to make tough decisions about what projects to focus on. And we’ve come to the difficult decision that Audioblogger demands too many resources, time, and money for us to continue its operation.

However, there are several other services that offer similar functionality. Odeo is not affiliated with any of these services, we only suggest them only in hopes that one or the other will be a good alternative for you.

Gabcast.com is a free service for recording by phone Hipcast.com has a seven day free trial and lots of features Gcast.com is another free service for phone recording

All of the phone posting services listed above are compatible with Odeo in that they produce podcast feeds, which can be imported to Odeo. Any audio file at Odeo can be posted on a blog by copying and pasting some embed code.

Odeo would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has tried Audioblogger. If you are interested in keeping up with our other blog-friendly projects, please have a look at Twitter.com and our customizable audio players.

Thanks,
The Odeo Team

Hot Pants! Lee Can Sell Down Under (but not North America)

Well now, if you are in Australia (Tim), you can buy these pants. If you are in America, you had better not click that link from work!

Lee Jeans’ controversial “Lolita” ad poster for spring-summer 2006 has been found acceptable by the Advertising Standards Board.

“The board (notes) that the woman is over 18, is fully clothed in attire that is fashionable amongst young women for summer, and that there is no nudity,” its determination said.

“The board also (notes) that consumption of this style of lollipop is now common amongst people over 18.”

What nipple?

Update: Search Flickr for "Lee Jeans Lolita to see more. These pictures show how the American version will have the hint of nipple removed.

Woman Rapes Boy Then Sues Him For Child Support

If you got pregnant at 19 ½ when you had sex with a 13 ½ year old boy, at 22 don’t take him to court for child support because he can finally work at 16. Matter of fact, don’t ever ask him for child support.

“But for her having made the application in Family Court, we never would have known about this,” Warren County District Attorney Kate Hogan said. “It was such an unusual way to have a case come forward.” [Source]

Quiet Down Class – Don’t Make Me Shoot My Gun!

Ah! Our reactive society thinks throwing guns at the teachers is going to make our schools safer. Ok. Maybe it will. At what cost? Our future is in the schools now. I am already disturbed by the overwhelming influence that the schools have on the upbringing of our children. I mean, for the bulk of their day we place the development of a human being – morals, ethics, beliefs, integrity, etc – into the hands of burnt out strangers or naive youth. What message are we communicating to the students when suddenly every adult in the school has a sidearm? Either a) we don’t trust you or b) you can’t trust the world. Regardless, we are bringing up our children to not trust and to believe that it is better to unquestionably close ourselves off (ie. lose liberties) in the name of safety. When we are pinching pennies in our retirement homes, what decisions will our youth be making for us as our political leaders?

I am not saying that arming teachers is wrong. Maybe it is necessary. But make it a responsive decision as opposed to a reactive decision. Respond by weighing pros and cons. You know, our airlines would be safer if we instituted strip searches and body cavity searches on ever passenger then sent them naked with their sore orafices to their cold seats. But that is not going to happen is it?

Poison in the air

Chlorine gas evacuates Apex, NC (relatively speaking, that’s just east of here – oh perhaps 3 to 500 miles east).

"This is the worst possible hazardous materials incident you could have," Radford said. [Source]

30 miles or so roughlly northwest of us they store the same stuff.

See also CNN coverage. This stuff makes me kick myself for letting my ARC training expire and for not having aquired Molly’s CD certification yet.

Message from Alvar Hanso

Currently on TheHansoFoundation.org:

To all:

The path of secrecy is a slippery slope. While necessity may dictate, at times, that we shade ourselves and our work from the all-too-often harsh light of inquiry, habitual secret-keeping can mire even the noblest of intentions in shadow. it is this shadow I fell prey to, blinded not only to the actions of colleagues like Dr. Thomas Werner Mittelwerk, but also to the works of my own hand.

I fear the lessons learned have cost many their happiness. Some few have even lost their lives. My regret for this is endless. But, I assure you now, as I did then, that the work of The Hanso Foundation has always been intended to bring rebirth to a dying land and a dying people.

Our methods must change. As of this moment, The Hanso Foundation enters a period of restructure and overhaul. Transparency and oversight will be our guiding prinicples, excellence in communication and response to feedback our greatest strengths. To save humanity, we need first tap into just that – our humanity.

Much time has passed – perhaps too much. Thanks to the tireless efforts of my daughter, Rachel Blake, and a worldwide movement set against the dark entity that was Thomas Mittelwerk’s regime, I have been exonerated and freed from imprisonment. Thanks to the grace and foresight of the Global Welfare Consortium, we at The Hanso Foundation have been given a second chance to build a future that can support, enrich, and cradle us all in peace and joy.

It is to this I dedicate my life and my Foundation. My only hope is that you will join me.

Namaste,
Alvar Hanso {signature}
