A religious person is a someone who is afraid of Hell; a spiritual person has been there and back.
In fact, I’m so spiritual I keep going back for more!

Posted by Doug McCaughan in : Publishing, VideoThere’s a single frame toward the middle of this that would make an awesome background or motivational poster.

Posted by Doug McCaughan in : Daily Life, Security, TechnologyMy computer has been performing poorly. So this morning I ran my virus scanner with its toughest settings for piece of mind. Instead I found a virus:
- C:\Documents and Settings\Doug McCaughan\Application Data\Google\mupd1_2_12916358.exe Malware name:Win32-Trogan-gen {Other} Virus/Worm
Guess it is time to do a security sweep of the home network. I bet the kids computers are overrun.

Handwritten Note April 23, 2009 9:22 pm
Posted by Doug McCaughan in : Philosophy, PoetryThis one is scribbled on a napkin shoved into my poetry journal and dated August 6, 2004 along with Of Time and Aging.

Another on the same napkin:

And the final is an old favorite that is not an original of mine.

My One-dimensional Reality April 23, 2009 9:05 pm
Posted by Doug McCaughan in : Philosophy, PoetryThis was written for a open mic night around 1992.
add a commentI wrote a poem the other day so in the spirit of the evening I would like to present it to you.
Ready?
It’s called "My One-dimensional Reality" and it goes like this:
Dot!
Well, it lacked a little point so I wrote another called "My Two-dimensional Reality" and tried to draw lines between the meanings. It was then that I started to get deep and philosophical and expanded the two poems into "My Three-dimensional Reality." It was here that my thoughts exploded in ALL directions.
I started to write "My Four-dimensional Reality" but I ran out of time.
And one day, I want to write about the larger dimensional realities but at the moment my concepts are beyond words.

How is Firefox reading my mind and will it cause cancer?! April 22, 2009 5:04 pm
Posted by Doug McCaughan in : Programming, Software, TechnologyIn Firefox’s search box, I typed "Mysql error no. 1130" and almost as fast as I typed the individual letters, the drop down box was recommending potential searches. It does this incredibly accurately and quickly for bizarre terms that under normal circumstances would never be put together. How are they doing this?! Programmaticly I can conjecture at how they’ve pulled this off. It’s a very impressive feature! (particularly if it really is using mind reading)

House Committee Hearing Tomorrow! Your pets are in danger! April 22, 2009 1:01 pm
Posted by Doug McCaughan in : Daily Life, Family, PetsI almost let this one slip by. Contact your representative today if you love your pets.
Anyone with pet fish, birds, reptiles, or small mammals will be affected by this bill. Any company selling product or services for pet fish, birds, reptiles or small mammals will be affected by this bill. Would you be impacted by "The Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act"?
- Virtually all fish in an aquarium are not native to the United States
- Most pet birds are species not native to the US
- Most reptiles kept as pets are not native to the US
- Hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs and ferrets are not native to the US
I think this comment from Facebook sums it up well:

It’s really backwards. They need to work on this. I’m all for protecting native wildlife and plants from harmful imported critters…but every area will have different problem animals. The problem critter that might thrive in Florida more than likely won’t be a problem in Minnesota. This is a ridiculous way of facing the problem. Needs work. Write your reps!

Knox County Schools Wastes Students Time April 21, 2009 12:24 pm
Posted by Doug McCaughan in : Education, HealthKnox County Schools wasted an hour and a half of our children’s lives today by having every student walk through a metal detector as they entered Bearden Middle Schoool and randomly searching every eighth student. This waste of money, teacher resources, and student time produced no weapons. Randomly searches are ineffective and counterproductive which is why I begged that that the school board vote no to random searches. This is the beginning to the end of your civil liberties. The principal went so far as to say that we need to get used to this because one day we will have to walk through metal detectors just to get in the grocery store. Seriously?! Are you really that scared?
The point of terrorism is to cause terror, sometimes to further a political goal and sometimes out of sheer hatred. The people terrorists kill are not the targets; they are collateral damage. And blowing up planes, trains, markets or buses is not the goal; those are just tactics.
The real targets of terrorism are the rest of us: the billions of us who are not killed but are terrorized because of the killing. The real point of terrorism is not the act itself, but our reaction to the act.
And we’re doing exactly what the terrorists want.

Know what I fear? The emotional damage you are causing my child by putting him through the stress of a pointless random search.
